Clubs and Bars of Charleston, SC
This is a very partial listing, and beware: Charleston has a high turnover rate.
We try to keep this list updated, but be sure to check directly with the venues.
Cumberlands
301 King Street
Charleston, SC 29401
(843) 577-9469
Cumberlands' new location opened in July 2004. They're in Granny's Goodies old spot on King (don't worry, Granny's is still back there). The crew even brought over "the wall" from the old location, full of promo shots of who knows how many bands that have played there.
Now located in the heart of downtown, with a huge room and a sound system to match, Cumberlands is at the center of Charleston's music scene. They have an eclectic variety of live local music and indie rock shows almost all nights of the week, and don't forget Metal Mondays, a unique Karaoke with a live band.
George's Sports Bar and Grill
1300 Savannah Highway
Charleston, SC 29407
(843) 763-0605
George's Sports Bar is a great little sports pub with bunches of TVs,
pool tables, a great meal selection, with lots of Greek dishes along with your regular bar food, and friendly waitresses and bartenders.
George's features acoustic music on Wednesdays, has trivia all the
time, and karaoke here & there.
The Island Clubhouse
1528 Ben Sawyer Blvd.
Mt. Pleasant, SC
(843) 881-3131
The Island Clubhouse is a laidback local hangout attached to the Classic Golf
putt putt course. It's a great alternative from your usual college crowd, with mostly an older clientele, and Fridays are always hoppin. They have a full menu at great prices with some good specials. Open back deck when it's nice out.
The Clubhouse has live music on the weekends, with bands and solo acts playing in a corner in the back room. The crowd is generous with tips if they like you, but they're not afraid to call the owner if they don't :)
The Map Room
1650 Sam Rittenberg Blvd.
Charleston, SC 29407
(843) 769-6336
Open in West Ashley as of November 2005, The Map Room is a nice sized room with a full PA, dance floor, lots of tables, and large bar area. Is it a bar, or is it a restaurant? Well, it tries to be both. From the start, they've brought in great acts and entertainment, but The Map Room is currently in transition, so who's to say where it's headed next. Bands, beware--make sure that your booking is doubly confirmed, or you may be disappointed.
The Music Farm
32 Ann Street
Charleston, SC 29403
(843) 722-8904
The Music Farm has long been considered Charleston's "premiere" venue, bringing in regional and national acts and boasting a 960 capacity. For the biggest shows in town, this is the place to be.
OceanSong Cafe
1400 Palm Blvd.
Isle of Palms, SC 29451
(843) 886-0707
The OceanSong Cafe, at the corner of the IOP Connector and Palm Blvd., has quite possibly the only non-smoking "listening room" in the Charleston area. It also has excellent dinner and lunch cuisine, favoring fresh local seafood.
Acoustic performers play throughout the week, but the OceanSong is best known for its Singer/Songwriter Night on Mondays, hosted by Carroll Brown. Gracing the stage is an impressive array of Charleston performers, the chops of which you don't often see at any ole open mic night.
Penachio's Seafood and Italian
Restaurant and Lounge
2447 Ashley River Road
Charleston, SC 29414
(843) 402-9640
Located West of the Ashley, Penachio's is actually two different, connected rooms: an intimate restaurant and a cozy lounge. You can eat an excellent meal, then meander into the Lounge to have a libation and enjoy the music. They have many food specials on weeknights, most notably the Filet and Lobster on occasion (The best meal in town, in this writer's humble opinion).
In the Lounge you'll find a bar, a couple of tables and booths, and some couches positioned near the performer's area. The Lounge is geared toward acoustic music, big enough for a solo act to a small trio. The setting is somewhere between a restaurant/bar and a listening room.
The Plex/The Memphis Blues Cafe
2390 W. Aviation Avenue
N. Charleston, SC 29406
(843) 225-7539
The Plex in North Chuck is affiliated with the House of Blues in Myrtle Beach. It was converted from an old movie theatre into a multi-room rock venue, with 2 main stages, The Plex itself and the slightly smaller Memphis Blues Cafe. Both rooms are huge and sound excellent. Probably holds a couple thousand, but check with the venue.
Brings in nationals and some popular regionals/locals, bringing the big shows back to Charleston.
The Pour House
1977 Maybank Highway
Charleston, SC
(843) 571-4343
The Pour House has moved to a better location on Maybank, and they're bringing in more talent than ever. They've come into their own as a music venue, with a stage, PA, and lights, while managing to maintain their comfortable, neighborhood watering-hole feel.
They're mostly geared to jam and groove-oriented bands, now with music most nights of the week.
Village Tavern
1055 Johnnie Dodds Blvd.
Mt. Pleasant, SC
(843) 884-6311
For its small size-- big for a neighborhood bar but small for a music venue-- The Village Tavern is doing a lot with music. They've put in a stage & a small sound system.
Brings in some indie nationals & regionals, and your more original, eclectic local rock bands. Altogether it's a very cool place, and try the homemade potato chips.
The Windjammer
1008 Ocean Blvd.
Isle of Palms, SC 29451
(843) 886-8596
Beach front! Beach front! Go up the stairs to an older wooden building with a good stage in the center of a length-wise room. Good bar, beach atmosphere. There's a back deck if the party's burning and you need some air. You can also go down the stairs to the beach itself (though leave your drinks behind, per SC law).
They get great parties out here, and nothing but the best live music on stage. They often hold special events like the Bikini Bash and various parties.
